Rescue – Thursday 26 November 2015

The Redcar RNLI IB1 inshore lifeboat was launched just after 4pm on Thursday 26 November 2015 after a member of the public dialled 999 when she became concerned for the wellbeing of a bodyboarder in the sea near the Beacon, Redcar.

The woman was photographing two bodyboarders in the sea opposite the Dundas Street slipway when one of them disappeared from sight, prompting her to contact UK Coastguard.

The lifeboat launched in failing light and ran alongside the remaining bodyboarder. He was able to confirm that the second person had returned to shore and was safe.

Dave Cocks, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Redcar RNLI, was at the scene on the Dundas Sterrt slipway. He said: ‘I spoke with the woman who raised the alarm. She was genuinely concerned for the bodyboarder who had gone out of sight.

‘She was extremely apologetic once we found that the person was safe ashore. We reassured her that we would rather answer a false alarm than not be called to someone who was genuinely in difficulties.’
